Animation and Motion Graphics
I love this stuff. Don't get me wrong, I like solving communications problems no matter what media is required. But there is something about adding that fourth dimension of time, and compositing, morphing, etc. And adding music... Way too much fun.
3D Animation
Problem:
The client wanted to demonstrate the patented internal mixing action of their high viscosity mixing machine at trade shows and other venues. The machine was too large and too complex to do a standard physical “cutaway”, and wouldn't be able to function in that configuration, thereby defeating the purpose. For technical reasons, AutoCAD® or similar 3D design files were not suitable.
Solution:
Using client-supplied Engineering drawings, I built a 3D scale computer model to the same ±0.001" tolerances as the actual machine (for technical reasons, the customer's CAD files were not usable in this particular case.) The outer case could then be “dissolved” to reveal the internal operation of the machine. The 3D animation sequence was output as video for use on CD and their website.

3D model part drawings like those above were created from engineering drawings, then used to build a highly accurate 3D computer model.

These stills from the animation show the case dissolving away to reveal the mixing shafts, the heated shaft and case, and the mixing and cleaning action of the blades. (Note: There is no audio in the animation below.) |
Motion Graphics |
Problem:The client wanted to attract attendees with an eye-catching, product oriented display on a large-screen video monitor in their trade show booth. The display needed to depict both product types and general capabilities with minimal text. The display needed controls to provide both single play for sales demo use, and automatic looping for trade show use. Solution:Product photography and text elements were used to create a motion graphics sequence. A high-energy soundbed was composed to provide an up-tempo beat. The motion graphics sequence was output in the DVD video format. A short sample clip of the sequence is provided here. |

The client needed a fun, light, and educational Flash intro to their website that would highlight the difficulties of learning a new language. A brief "history" of the technologies and techniques for language learning was to be incorporated as well. A script and voiceover were written and recorded. Characters and props were developed to help convey the overall story. The final animation runs 1:56. The animation was built in Adobe® After Effects® at HD resolution, and converted to Flash video. |

This is the animated portion of a brief introduction to a web-based service that matches expert consultants with client companies looking for those services. |
